D7000

I’m not sure how many of you pay attention to my tags, but if you don’t, you should.

Anyway, if you have been paying attention to my tags, you may have noticed that I recently upgraded cameras from the Nikon D90 to the Nikon D7000.  I know, I know - here I am giving all sorts of advice that it doesn’t matter what camera you use but, man, have I fallen in love with this camera.  Now, I’m not suggesting you should drop whatever camera you have, and I’m definitely not saying that the D90 is a piece of crap, but let me tell you what I like about it, and why I like it so much, in some order that I’m not totally clear about.

  • Bigger ISO Range
This one is big - the ISO range of the D90 was officially something like 200-3200, which, if you aren’t a photo nerd, has to do with how quickly the camera processes light.  At high ISOs (1600, 3200, others), the photos look ‘noisy’ which isn’t desirable in digital - it ends up adding very subtle coloring to photos that doesn’t look good.  The D7000 has a range of 100-25600 - that’s a huge difference.
What that number actually represents is a greater latitude and comfort level in taking photos, especially for me.  I’ve got really shaky hands (seriously) and the fact that I now can shoot even more in low light is fantastically exciting for me.
  • 100% Viewfinder Coverage
This is kind of huge - on the D90 there was something like 94% coverage, which meant that I’d take a picture thinking I saw the full frame, but in reality there’d be a bit of extra ‘action’ going on around the frame that I couldn’t see.  Now I get the full shot, all the time.
  • Old Lens Compatibility
This is really nice to have for people with old lenses.  I picked up two old Nikon lenses at a flea market for $60 and now I have access to even more lenses that can actually be affordable.
  • Better Construction
This is really a ‘nice to have’ but - I finally have a weatherproof camera - this is nice for someone like me who has their camera with them always.
  • Video Mode
Well, you saw the video - it means I can do more of those sorts of things should I get the hankering.

So there you go - thanks for letting me nerd out a bit
